In Bill Keenan’s THE HALLWAY, two guests who happen to be staying on the same floor at the Marriott hotel, accidentally lock themselves out of their individual rooms at the same time. It is the middle of the night. 3:00 am.
Nora (Zoe Zien) was just going to the ice machine down the hall and forgot her key. Just as Nora is coming to terms with the fact that she may be there until housekeeping arrives the next morning, Dean (Eric Berger) appears. He has just been involved in a big dustup and has stormed out of the room to cool off for a while.
After pondering the situation at hand, the two strangers start talking. Really talking.
The story is original. There are enough twists and turns to keep the audience’s attention. The one item that the playwright and director might consider is adding a little more to the run time of 30 minutes which may give the story a more gradual opportunity to be unveiled. The actors do a nice job with it, as is; yet may find it beneficial to be able to develop their relationship with each other more fully.
THE HALLWAY is one of thirty-six shows at this year’s Midtown International Theater Festival. The festival runs through July 26.
